Our Philosophy

Three Decades of
Devoted Discovery

Since 1987, we have walked the vineyards of France with a single purpose: to find wines that move us. We travel to the source — tasting with the winemakers, studying the terroirs, understanding the vintage conditions that make each wine unique.

Our selection is never the result of a database. It is the product of direct relationships, honest conversations, and the irreplaceable experience of tasting across decades.

The Ultimate Guide to Buying Bordeaux Grand Cru: What Every Wine Lover Needs to Know in 2025

Bordeaux Grand Cru wine occupies a rarefied position in the wine world. Whether you are buying your first classified growth or adding to an established cellar, understanding the landscape of Bordeaux's finest estates is essential to making confident, rewarding purchases.

This guide draws on over thirty years of tasting experience and direct relationships with château owners across the Left and Right Banks. Our aim is simple: to give you the knowledge to buy well, avoid the pitfalls, and discover wines that will bring you genuine pleasure for decades to come.

Understanding the 1855 Classification

The 1855 Classification remains the foundational reference for Médoc wines. Commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III for the Paris Universal Exhibition, it ranked 61 estates from the Médoc into five growths based on their market prices at the time. It has changed only once in 170 years: in 1973, when Mouton Rothschild was elevated from Second to First Growth.

The five First Growths — Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux, Château Mouton Rothschild, and Château Haut-Brion — remain the benchmark against which all Bordeaux is measured.

The classification was never intended to be permanent. Yet its endurance is a testament to the extraordinary consistency of Bordeaux's greatest estates.

Right Bank vs. Left Bank: A Crucial Distinction

The Gironde estuary divides Bordeaux into two distinct wine cultures, each with its own grape varieties, soil types, and classification systems.

The Left Bank (Médoc & Graves)

Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, grown on deep gravel banks. The wines are structured, tannic, and built for long ageing. The most important appellations are Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe, and Margaux.

The Right Bank (Pomerol & Saint-Émilion)

Here Merlot reigns, grown on clay and limestone soils. The wines tend to be rounder, more immediately approachable. Pomerol, though small and unclassified, produces some of Bordeaux's most collectable bottles, including Pétrus and Le Pin.

The Best Buying Opportunities in 2025

Savvy buyers are finding exceptional value in the Second and Third Growths, many performing at First Growth quality levels. Our top recommendations:

En Primeur: Is It Still Worth It?

Buying wine en primeur — as futures — was once the best way to secure top Bordeaux at favourable prices. Today, for the very greatest vintages from the most prestigious estates, en primeur pricing can still offer value. For most wines, waiting for release or buying at auction often makes more financial sense.

Our recommendation: en primeur is worth considering for exceptional vintages (2019, 2020, 2022) and small-production Right Bank wines that are genuinely difficult to obtain post-release.

Storage and Service

The finest Bordeaux requires proper cellaring to reach its potential. Ideal conditions: 12–14°C, 70% humidity, complete darkness, and freedom from vibration. When serving a mature Bordeaux (15+ years), allow at least two hours to breathe in a decanter. Serve at 17–18°C.

Burgundy's Grand Cru Vineyards: A Complete Map and Tasting Guide

Burgundy's 33 Grand Cru vineyards occupy a combined area of just 1,248 hectares — less than 2% of the region's total production. Yet they represent the pinnacle of what Pinot Noir and Chardonnay can achieve anywhere on earth.

Why Terroir Matters More in Burgundy

In Bordeaux, the estate defines the wine. In Burgundy, the plot of land is supreme. A Grand Cru vineyard like Chambertin can be divided among dozens of different growers, each producing wines of dramatically different character from the same designated ground. This is the concept of terroir taken to its logical extreme.

The Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits

The northern section of the Côte d'Or is home to all of Burgundy's red Grand Crus:

How to Build a Champagne Cellar: Grower Champagnes vs. Grandes Marques

Champagne is one of wine's most versatile pleasures — equally at home as an aperitif, at the dinner table, and as a serious subject for the collector. Building a Champagne cellar is an investment in future joy, a way of tracking the evolution of one of France's most complex wine regions.

The Grandes Marques: Why They Remain Essential

The great Champagne houses — Krug, Bollinger, Roederer, Pol Roger, Taittinger — built their reputations on the alchemy of blending wines from hundreds of plots across multiple vintages to create house styles that are recognisable year after year. For a cellar, the prestige cuvées are cornerstones that can age for twenty years or more.

Essential Grandes Marques Bottles

The Grower Revolution: Why You Cannot Ignore It

Over the past fifteen years, Récoltant-Manipulants (RMs) — growers who make wine exclusively from their own vineyards — now number over 5,000 and include some of the region's most exciting producers. Grower Champagnes express a specific place and a specific vision at prices that make the grandes marques look expensive.

The best grower Champagnes are among the most thrilling wines being made anywhere in the world right now. They are Burgundy in a flute.

Bordeaux

Cabernet Sauvignon · Merlot · Cabernet Franc

Bordeaux is the world's most celebrated wine region — a mosaic of gravel banks, clay plateaux, and limestone escarpments stretching across southwest France. The Gironde estuary divides it into two distinct cultures: the Left Bank, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the famous gravel of the Médoc; and the Right Bank, where Merlot reigns on the clay and limestone of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion.

The 1855 Classification remains the definitive hierarchy of the Left Bank, with the five First Growths — Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Mouton Rothschild, and Haut-Brion — at its apex. On the Right Bank, the unclassified communes of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion produce wines of equal prestige, including the legendary Pétrus and Le Pin.

Burgundy

Pinot Noir · Chardonnay · Aligoté

Burgundy is the spiritual home of terroir — the idea that a specific plot of land, shaped by its soils, aspect, and microclimate, produces a wine unlike any other. Here, the plot is sovereign. The same Grand Cru vineyard can be farmed by a dozen different growers, each producing wines of entirely different character from the same ground.

The Côte d'Or — the golden slope — runs north to south for just 60km, yet contains 33 Grand Cru vineyards and hundreds of Premier Crus. In the Côte de Nuits, Pinot Noir achieves its most complex and long-lived expressions. In the Côte de Beaune, Chardonnay reaches its absolute pinnacle in the Montrachet family of Grand Crus.

Champagne

Chardonnay · Pinot Noir · Pinot Meunier

Champagne is defined by latitude, chalk, and ingenuity. At the northern limit of viable viticulture, the Champenois long struggled to make still wine — and discovered instead that the region's cool temperatures and porous chalk soils created the conditions for the most extraordinary sparkling wines on earth.

The méthode champenoise — second fermentation in bottle — creates wines of extraordinary complexity, from the yeasty, toasty non-vintage blends of the great houses to the mineral-driven, vintage expressions of the finest grower-producers. Blanc de Blancs (pure Chardonnay) and Blanc de Noirs (pure Pinot Noir or Meunier) represent the extremes of the stylistic spectrum.

Rhône Valley

Syrah · Grenache · Viognier · Mourvèdre

The Rhône Valley is a tale of two regions. In the north, narrow terraced vineyards of granite and schist cling to near-vertical slopes above the river. Here Syrah — and only Syrah — produces wines of extraordinary concentration, pepper, and mineral tension: Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas. The single-variety white Condrieu and Château-Grillet showcase Viognier at its most ethereal.

The Southern Rhône is broader, sunnier, and more Mediterranean in character. Châteauneuf-du-Pape, its greatest appellation, permits up to 18 grape varieties in the blend, producing wines of warmth, spice, and remarkable longevity on its famous galet-covered soils.

Loire Valley

Chenin Blanc · Sauvignon Blanc · Cabernet Franc · Melon

Stretching over 1,000km from the Atlantic coast to the heart of France, the Loire Valley is the country's most diverse wine region. Its wines range from bone-dry Muscadet to lusciously sweet Vouvray, from the crisp mineral Sancerre of the upper Loire to the elegant Cabernet Franc-based reds of Chinon and Bourgueil.

Chenin Blanc is the region's signature grape — capable of producing wines of extraordinary longevity in both dry (Savennières) and sweet (Quarts de Chaume, Bonnezeaux) styles. Sauvignon Blanc achieves its most refined expressions in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where limestone and silex soils provide an unmistakable mineral precision.

The Team Behind the Selection

Our Sommeliers

Every bottle in our collection has been tasted, debated, and personally approved by our team of Master Sommeliers and wine specialists.

A Team Built on Passion

Amazing French Wines was founded in 1987 by Jean-Pierre Moreau, a Master Sommelier who believed that the greatest wines should be accessible to anyone willing to learn. Today, our team of five sommeliers — including two Masters and three Advanced — travels to France's vineyards every year, tasting thousands of wines to select the few hundred that meet our standards.

We don't rely on scores or trends. We rely on our palates, our relationships with producers, and over a century of combined tasting experience.

Jean-Pierre Moreau, MS

Founder & Lead Sommelier — Jean-Pierre earned his Master Sommelier diploma in 1992 and has spent over three decades building direct relationships with the greatest domaines and châteaux of France. His specialities are Bordeaux and Burgundy, with a particular focus on identifying undervalued estates before the market catches on.

Sophie Beaumont, MW

Head of Burgundy & Loire — Sophie holds both the Master of Wine and Advanced Sommelier qualifications. She oversees our Burgundy, Loire Valley, and Alsace selections, and is responsible for our acclaimed grower Champagne programme. Her annual Burgundy buying trip spans three weeks and covers over 60 domaines.

Marc Delacroix

Champagne & Sparkling Specialist — Marc spent eight years working in Champagne before joining Amazing French Wines. He maintains relationships with over 40 grower-producers and is our go-to authority on both the grandes marques and the exciting récoltant-manipulant movement.

Isabelle Fontaine

Rhône Valley & Southern France — Isabelle's expertise spans the entire Rhône corridor, from the granite terraces of Côte-Rôtie to the garrigue-scented vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. She also curates our Languedoc and Provence selections.

Laurent Mercier

Cellar Director & En Primeur Specialist — Laurent manages our temperature-controlled storage facilities and oversees all en primeur campaigns. With 15 years of experience in wine logistics, he ensures every bottle arrives in perfect condition.

Our Philosophy

We taste with the winemakers. We walk the vineyards. We understand the vintage conditions, the soil profiles, and the philosophy of each producer. This is not a catalogue business — it is a curation built on trust, knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to quality.

Every wine we offer carries our personal recommendation. If we wouldn't serve it at our own table, it doesn't make the list.

Cellar Building

Build a collection that matures with you — from first purchases to a cellar of distinction, guided by our sommelier team every step of the way.

A Cellar for Every Stage

A great wine cellar is not built in a day. It is the product of thoughtful purchasing over time — balancing wines for immediate enjoyment with bottles destined for future maturity. Our cellar building service provides the structure, the knowledge, and the access to help you build a collection you'll be proud of.

Our Approach

  • Assessment: We begin with an audit of your existing collection (if any), your storage conditions, your drinking habits, and your goals — whether pleasure, investment, or both.
  • Strategy: We develop a purchasing plan that spans ready-to-drink wines, medium-term holds, and long-term investments, calibrated to your budget and timeline.
  • Execution: Our team sources wines directly from producers, négociants, and our private reserves, ensuring provenance and optimal storage from vineyard to your cellar.
  • Ongoing Management: We provide regular cellar reviews, drinking window updates, and recommendations for replenishment as you open and enjoy your wines.

Storage Solutions

Proper storage is essential. We offer professional bonded storage in temperature-controlled facilities (12–14°C, 70% humidity) in London and Paris. All wines are fully insured and can be delivered to you at any time.

For clients with private cellars, we provide guidance on climate control, racking, inventory management, and cellar insurance.

Wine Futures

En Primeur

Secure the finest Bordeaux and Burgundy before they're bottled — at release prices, with guaranteed provenance.

What Is En Primeur?

En primeur — buying wine "as futures" — allows you to purchase wines while they are still ageing in barrel, typically 12–18 months before bottling. This system, most established in Bordeaux, gives buyers access to the best estates at initial release prices and guarantees perfect provenance from château to cellar.

Why Buy En Primeur?

  • Price Advantage: In strong vintages, en primeur prices are typically 15–30% below eventual retail prices for the most sought-after wines.
  • Guaranteed Allocation: The finest estates produce limited quantities. En primeur ensures you secure bottles that may be impossible to find after release.
  • Perfect Provenance: Wines are shipped directly from the château to professional storage — no risk of poor handling or counterfeit bottles.
  • Investment Potential: Top Bordeaux and Burgundy have historically appreciated significantly, making en primeur purchases a compelling alternative asset.

Our En Primeur Process

Each spring, our sommelier team travels to Bordeaux for an intensive week of barrel tastings across the classified estates. We taste over 200 wines and produce honest, independent assessments before any purchasing decisions are made.

We publish our en primeur report to clients in April/May, with clear recommendations on which wines to buy and which to avoid. Our guidance prioritises value — we never recommend a wine simply because it is prestigious.

Beyond Bordeaux

While Bordeaux remains the centre of the en primeur market, we also offer futures from selected Burgundy domaines and Rhône Valley producers where advance purchasing is available. These allocations are extremely limited and offered first to our existing cellar-building clients.

When to Be Cautious

En primeur is not always the best strategy. In average vintages, or for widely available wines, buying on release or at auction can offer better value. Our commitment is to give you honest advice — even when that means recommending you wait.

We reserve the right to refuse or cancel any order for reasons including pricing errors, product unavailability, suspected fraud, or failure to meet age verification requirements.

6. Delivery

We deliver to most countries worldwide, subject to local import regulations. Delivery timeframes are estimates and not guaranteed. We are not liable for delays caused by customs, weather, carrier issues, or other circumstances beyond our control.

An adult of legal drinking age must be present to receive deliveries. If no one is available, the carrier will follow their standard redelivery procedure. Risk of loss or damage passes to you upon delivery.

You are responsible for any customs duties, import taxes, or fees imposed by your country of residence. These charges are not included in our prices.

7. Returns and Refunds

Due to the nature of wine and food safety regulations, we can only accept returns for wines that are corked, faulty, or materially different from their description. Please contact us within 14 days of delivery with details and, if possible, photographs of the issue.

For faulty wines, we will offer a replacement or full refund at our discretion, including return shipping costs. Refunds are processed to the original payment method within 14 business days.

We cannot accept returns for wines that have been improperly stored after delivery, or for orders placed in error where the wine is not faulty.

8. En Primeur Purchases

En primeur wines are sold as futures — you are purchasing wine that has not yet been bottled. Delivery typically occurs 18–24 months after the vintage. En primeur purchases are non-refundable and non-cancellable once confirmed, as we are contractually committed to the producer.

In the unlikely event that an en primeur wine becomes unavailable, we will offer an alternative of comparable quality or a full refund.
